Sunset Boulevard Guide: Both Coasters Peak at Noon

Ride Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror at 8am and you will wait 35.3 minutes for the pair. Ride them at noon and you will wait 91.9. Sunset Boulevard is the rare corner of Disney World where both headliners agree exactly on when to be cheap and when to be brutal, which makes it one of the easiest touring decisions in the park — and one of the most expensive to get wrong.

Same best hour, same worst hour. Add the best-hour figures and you get 35.3 minutes (22.2 + 13.1). Add the worst-hour figures and you get 91.9 (52 + 39.9). The difference is 56.6 minutes — most of an hour, bought by walking down one street first instead of fourth.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is also the more punishing of the two in absolute terms. Its worst hour costs 29.8 minutes more than its best (52 − 22.2); Tower of Terror's gap is 26.8 (39.9 − 13.1). Neither is small.

Why they move together

Sunset Boulevard is a dead end. It branches off Hollywood Boulevard partway in, runs one direction, and ends at the two towers. There is no through traffic and no second entrance, so the street fills and empties as one body of people rather than in waves.

That shows up in the park-wide numbers too. Hollywood Studios averages 18.4 minutes per attraction at 8am and 37.1 at noon — its best and worst hours, matching Sunset Boulevard's exactly.

The important detail is what comes after noon: the park does not recover. It sits above 28 minutes from 10am right through to 8pm — a ten-hour plateau. Unlike EPCOT or Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios gives you one good window in the morning and one at the very end of the night, and almost nothing in between.

The ride order that works

1. Walk to Sunset Boulevard first, not to Toy Story Land. At 8am both towers are at their floor. Tower of Terror's 13.1-minute reading is the single cheapest thing either coaster will ever be.
2. Tower of Terror before Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. They share a best hour, so you cannot have both at 8am. Tower of Terror climbs faster off its floor in proportional terms (39.9 ÷ 13.1 = 3.0x, against 52 ÷ 22.2 = 2.3x for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster), so take the steeper one first.
3. Do not come back at noon for the one you missed. At noon you are paying the peak on both rides and the park's worst hour at the same time. Anything else in the park is a better use of that hour.
4. Use 9pm and 10pm as your second chance. The park drops to 20.9 and 20.8 in its last two hours, close to its 8am floor. If your morning went sideways, the end of the night is the only other cheap window Hollywood Studios offers.
5. Skip Sunset in the afternoon entirely. Between 1pm and 7pm the park never falls below 29.5 minutes per attraction. Spend it on Echo Lake, where Star Tours – The Adventures Continue averages 5.7 minutes across the whole day.

Which day to pick

Hollywood Studios is quietest on Wednesday at 25 minutes per attraction and busiest on Friday at 34.2. That is a 9.2-minute difference before you have made a single routing decision.

Wednesday and Thursday sit close together (25 and 25.5). If Wednesday is committed to another park, Thursday costs you half a minute per ride.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rock 'n' Roller Coaster or Tower of Terror the bigger priority? Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, by average wait — 43.5 minutes against 32.7. It is the second-longest line in the park behind Slinky Dog Dash.

Can I do both at rope drop? Realistically you get one at its 8am floor and the second shortly after. Even a 9am ride on the second one beats the noon figure by a wide margin.

What if I only have an afternoon? Take the evening. The park's 9pm and 10pm readings (20.9 and 20.8) are the only afternoon-or-later hours anywhere near the morning floor.

Does Sunset Boulevard have anything besides the two towers? Not among the attractions we track for waits. That is part of why the street behaves as a single unit — there is no low-wait ride to spread the crowd across.
