Disney World With Teenagers: Which Thrill-Ride Lines Pay Off

Expedition Everest averages 18.3 minutes. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind averages 72.2. Both are big coasters at Walt Disney World, and one costs you four times the line of the other for roughly the same three minutes of ride.

Touring advice for families is mostly written around small children: short rides, early nights, a midday break. A teen group has the opposite constraints. They will skip the castle show, they want the coasters, and they will cheerfully stay until close — which turns out to be the single biggest advantage they have.

Every major Disney thrill ride, by average wait

Attraction Park Avg wait (min) Best hour Best-hour avg Worst hour Worst-hour avg
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind EPCOT 72.2 10pm 50.4 7pm 87.7
Slinky Dog Dash Hollywood Studios 60.3 10pm 39.4 12pm 74.9
Test Track EPCOT 60.3 8am 40.9 1pm 69.6
TRON Lightcycle / Run Magic Kingdom 52.3 8am 34.6 8pm 63.3
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets Hollywood Studios 43.5 8am 22.2 12pm 52
Avatar Flight of Passage Animal Kingdom 41.1 8pm 20.8 8am 53.2
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Hollywood Studios 40.4 10pm 20.5 12pm 51.8
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Magic Kingdom 39.6 10pm 27.7 5pm 47
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Hollywood Studios 32.7 8am 13.1 12pm 39.9
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Magic Kingdom 27.2 8am 12.1 12pm 35.2
Space Mountain Magic Kingdom 25 8am 17 12pm 32.7
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run Hollywood Studios 22.2 10pm 11.1 11am 34.4
Expedition Everest Animal Kingdom 18.3 8am 6.5 12pm 32.9
Mission: SPACE EPCOT 15.7 10pm 12.8 12pm 18.5

Two things jump out. First, eight of those fourteen rides share the same worst hour: noon. Second, the cheapest two are the two nobody plans a day around. Expedition Everest at 18.3 minutes and Mission: SPACE at 15.7 are the only major Disney thrill rides averaging under twenty minutes, and Everest at 8am drops to 6.5 — a walk-on for the park's one real coaster.

The teen advantage is the last hour

Six of the fourteen bottom out at 10pm, and three of them are in the same park. Hollywood Studios is where a group willing to stay late gets paid:

  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — 20.5 minutes at 10pm against 51.8 at noon: 51.8 − 20.5 = 31.3 minutes saved
  • Slinky Dog Dash — 39.4 against 74.9: 74.9 − 39.4 = 35.5 minutes saved
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run — 11.1 against 34.4: 34.4 − 11.1 = 23.3 minutes saved

Ride all three late instead of at midday and the difference is 31.3 + 35.5 + 23.3 = 90.1 minutes. That is an hour and a half of standing, recovered by changing nothing except when you walk into Galaxy's Edge.

Hollywood Studios park-wide confirms the shape: 37.1 minutes at noon, 20.8 at 10pm, 18.4 at 8am. It is a park with a cheap start, a cheap finish and a very expensive middle.

The mistake most teen groups make

They rope drop the wrong rides. The instinct is to run at the biggest name in the park, but three of the four longest Disney thrill lines are not cheapest in the morning at all:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is cheapest at 10pm (50.4) and dearest at 7pm (87.7)
  • Slinky Dog Dash is cheapest at 10pm (39.4)
  • Avatar Flight of Passage is worst at 8am (53.2) and best at 8pm (20.8)

Flight of Passage is the clearest trap. Its single worst hour of the day is the opening hour, and its best is two hours before Animal Kingdom closes. A group that sprints to Pandora at rope drop pays 53.2 minutes for what an evening group pays 20.8.

The rides that genuinely reward an 8am arrival are the Sunset Boulevard pair at Hollywood Studios and most of Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland and Frontierland: Tower of Terror (13.1 at 8am), Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (22.2), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (12.1), Space Mountain (17) and TRON Lightcycle / Run (34.6).

If the point is coaster count, go to Universal

If the group's actual goal is riding as many coasters as possible rather than seeing specific ones, the shortest thrill lines in Orlando are not at Disney:

Attraction Park Avg wait (min) Best hour Best-hour avg
Doctor Doom's Fearfall Islands of Adventure 8.5 8am 5.8
The Incredible Hulk Coaster Islands of Adventure 13.8 8am 4.4
Stardust Racers Epic Universe 18.3 8am 9.1
Revenge of the Mummy Universal Studios Florida 24.2 8am 12.5
Jurassic World VelociCoaster Islands of Adventure 31.1 8am 11.8
Curse of the Werewolf Epic Universe 35.4 8am 4.2
Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge Epic Universe 42.2 8pm 13
Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Islands of Adventure 55.9 10pm 38.6
Mine-Cart Madness Epic Universe 81.6 9pm 58.1

The Incredible Hulk Coaster averages 13.8 minutes and drops to 4.4 in the opening hour, which is less than Expedition Everest's 6.5 and a fraction of anything comparable at Disney. Islands of Adventure park-wide averages 11.9 minutes at 8am, its own cheapest hour of the day.

Two Universal exceptions to the morning rule: Hagrid's is worst at 9am (65.5 minutes) and best at 10pm, and Mine-Cart Madness is cheapest at 9pm.

A two-day teen plan

Day one — Hollywood Studios, both ends. Open at 8am on Sunset Boulevard: Tower of Terror, then Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Leave the park entirely across the noon peak. Come back for 8pm and spend the last two hours on Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, all three of which bottom out at 10pm.

Day two — Animal Kingdom afternoon into evening. Arrive after lunch rather than at rope drop. Expedition Everest is the exception worth an early stop if you are there at 8am (6.5 minutes), but Avatar Flight of Passage wants 8pm and Animal Kingdom's park-wide average falls from 26.9 minutes at 11am to 12.4 at 7pm. This is the one Disney park where a late start is the better plan.

If you add a third day: Magic Kingdom at 8am for TRON, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, then stay to close for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at 10pm. Note that Tiana's Bayou Adventure is closed for refurbishment and not expected back until December, so Frontierland is one ride lighter this month.

Frequently asked questions

Is a single rider line worth it for a teen group? Often yes, because teens are the one group that genuinely does not mind being split up. We cover which ones actually save time in Disney single rider lines and Universal Orlando single rider lines.

Which Disney coaster has the shortest line? Expedition Everest, at an 18.3-minute average and 6.5 minutes in the opening hour.

Is it worth staying until close every night? For Hollywood Studios, yes — three major rides hit their floor at 10pm there. For Animal Kingdom the payoff hour is 7pm to 8pm, and for EPCOT the headliner is cheapest at 10pm but still 50.4 minutes.

Should we skip rope drop entirely? No, but be selective. The 8am hour is worth getting up for at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, and genuinely counterproductive at Animal Kingdom.
