No Rope Drop? A Disney World Plan That Starts at 10am

Arriving at 10am instead of 8am costs 13.5 minutes on every line you join at Hollywood Studios. At EPCOT it costs 0.7 minutes. Same resort, same two-hour lie-in, wildly different bill.

Most touring advice assumes you are at the gate before opening. Plenty of families are not, for reasons that are not going to change: small children, a time zone, a late flight, a park day that follows a party night. A late start is not a ruined day. It is a day that has to be built differently, and the shape of that day depends entirely on which park you are standing in.

What a 10am start actually costs, park by park

Each park's park-wide average at 8am and at 10am, and the difference between the two:

Park 8am 10am Cost of starting late
Magic Kingdom 11.5 16.4 4.9
EPCOT 25.3 26 0.7
Hollywood Studios 18.4 31.9 13.5
Animal Kingdom 16.5 23.9 7.4

EPCOT barely notices. Hollywood Studios charges nearly three times what Magic Kingdom does. If you have one park day you know will start late, and the order is yours to choose, that table is the whole decision.

Magic Kingdom from 10am: the character-meet window

Magic Kingdom's 8am figure of 11.5 minutes is the cheapest hour at any Disney park, and a 10am arrival gives it up. The consolation is that Magic Kingdom never gets truly ugly: from 10am it runs 16.4, then 19.1 at 11am, 20.2 at noon, and it stays between 17.9 and 20.5 until 8pm.

The useful quirk is that Magic Kingdom's character meets bottom out at 9am and peak in the early evening, while its rides are climbing all morning. At 10am the meets are still near their floor and the rides are not.

Attraction Best hour Best avg Worst hour Worst avg
Princess Fairytale Hall 9am 13.3 6pm 32.1
Meet Princess Tiana and a Visiting Princess 9am 11.1 6pm 28.6
Meet Ariel at Her Grotto 9am 12.6 6pm 24.6
Enchanted Tales with Belle 9am 9.7 6pm 17.8

10am to 11am. Fantasyland's meet-and-greets, in whatever order suits your group. All four are at or near their cheapest hour and all four more than double by early evening.

11am to 1pm. This is the block to spend somewhere other than a queue. Jungle Cruise hits its worst hour at 11am (34.8 minutes) and Meet Mickey at Town Square Theater does too (24.7). At noon, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (35.2), Space Mountain (32.7), Haunted Mansion (23.2), Pirates of the Caribbean (19.9) and it's a small world (13.3) all peak together. Eat here.

2pm. Magic Kingdom's only real afternoon dip, at 17.9 minutes park-wide. One mid-sized ride, then keep moving.

9pm to close. The payoff for a late start is a late finish. Eight Magic Kingdom attractions post their single cheapest hour at 10pm: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (27.7), Peter Pan's Flight (20.3), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (11), Mickey's PhilharMagic (10.3), Country Bear Musical Jamboree (9.1), Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room (8.9), The Barnstormer (5.2) and it's a small world (5.1). Park-wide, 9pm runs 14.6 and 10pm runs 12.4 — the second-cheapest stretch of the day after rope drop, and the one a late start does not cost you.

EPCOT from 10am: the cheapest park to be late at

EPCOT's curve is the flattest at Walt Disney World — 18.4 minutes at its best hour against 28.8 at its worst, a 57% spread. A 10am arrival costs 0.7 minutes against 8am, and EPCOT's 9am figure (23.6) is actually lower than its 10am figure (26).

What you do lose is a single hour of real value, because four EPCOT attractions are cheapest at 8am and three of them peak at 11am:

Attraction Best hour Best avg Worst hour Worst avg
Soarin' Around the World 8am 6.6 11am 32.2
Spaceship Earth 8am 5 11am 24.3
The Seas with Nemo & Friends 8am 5 11am 19.6
Test Track 8am 40.9 1pm 69.6

10am to 11am. You have exactly one hour before those three hit their worst reading of the day. Spaceship Earth and The Seas with Nemo & Friends are both short rides — clear them, and accept that Soarin' is better later in the day than at 11am.

11am to 4pm. World Showcase. Two EPCOT lines reward a late start outright: Meet Anna and Elsa at Royal Sommerhus is cheapest at 4pm (25.3 minutes) and most expensive at 9am (54.6), and Meet Beloved Disney Pals at Mickey & Friends is cheapest at 2pm (14.1). A rope-drop plan has to fight both of these. Yours does not.

Last two hours. EPCOT's single best hour is 10pm (18.4 minutes), and five of its lines agree: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (50.4 at 10pm against a 72.2 average), Frozen Ever After (21.5 against 46.9), Remy's Ratatouille Adventure (17.4 against 42.8), Mission: SPACE (12.8) and Living with the Land (5, against 22.3 at 11am). Stack the headliners at the end and a 10am start costs you almost nothing.

Hollywood Studios from 10am: triage, then wait for dark

This is the park a late start genuinely hurts. By 10am the park-wide average is 31.9 minutes, already 73% above the 8am figure (31.9 ÷ 18.4 = 1.73), and it climbs for two more hours to a 37.1-minute peak at noon.

Three things are still worth doing on arrival, because they barely move:

Attraction Best hour Best avg Worst hour Worst avg
Star Tours – The Adventures Continue 8am 4.5 11am 8.1
Meet Edna Mode at the Edna Mode Experience 12pm 13.5 10am 14
Meet Olaf at Celebrity Spotlight 9am 9.8 11am 19.8

Star Tours' worst hour averages 8.1 minutes. Edna Mode's whole daily range is half a minute — 13.5 at best, 14 at worst. Olaf is the one with a clock on it: cheapest at 9am (9.8) and worst at 11am (19.8), so clear it first.

11am to 2pm. Do not join a headliner queue in this window. Six Hollywood Studios attractions hit their worst hour at exactly noon — Slinky Dog Dash (74.9), Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets (52), Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (51.8), Toy Story Mania! (44.1), The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (39.9) and Alien Swirling Saucers (30.8) — and two more peak an hour earlier at 11am: Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway (44.3) and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (34.4).

2pm to 7pm. The park eases to 29.5 minutes by 4pm but never drops near its morning floor, and it climbs back to 32.9 at 7pm. Treat this as show-and-meal time, not ride time.

Last hour. Four attractions are cheapest at 10pm: Slinky Dog Dash (39.4 against a 60.3 average), Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (20.5 against 40.4), Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (11.1) and Alien Swirling Saucers (5.6). On a late-start day at Hollywood Studios, this hour is the plan. Everything else is filler.

Animal Kingdom from 10am: the one park where late is correct

Animal Kingdom's curve falls almost continuously from 11am to close: 26.9 at 11am, 24.1 at 1pm, 21 at 2pm, 18.8 at 3pm, 17.6 at 4pm and 5pm, 16.3 at 6pm, and a day-best 12.4 at 7pm. Arriving at 10am means skipping the climb and walking into the decline.

It also means avoiding the park's most badly timed hour for its two biggest draws. Avatar Flight of Passage's single worst hour is 8am (53.2 minutes) and its best is 8pm (20.8). Rope drop is the wrong answer here on purpose.

10am to 11am. Two caveats first: 10am is Kilimanjaro Safaris' own worst hour (44.6 minutes), so do not start in Africa. Expedition Everest is cheapest at 8am (6.5) and peaks at noon (32.9), so ride it now. Bluey's Wild World at Conservation Station follows the same shape (12.4 at 8am, 27.5 at noon), and Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost is cheapest in the morning (14.3) and worst at 6pm (40.3).

11am. The park's worst hour, and the worst hour for Na'vi River Journey (45 minutes) and Zootopia: Better Zoogether! (14.6). Nothing in Pandora is worth joining here.

Afternoon onward. Everything improves. Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is cheapest at 6pm (8.8), Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at 6pm (4.4), Kilimanjaro Safaris at 7pm (6.9 — against 44.6 at 10am), and Kali River Rapids at 8pm (3.3, against 37.2 at 1pm). Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey are both cheapest at 8pm, at 20.8 and 10.8 minutes.

A late-start Animal Kingdom day that finishes at close can hit the cheapest hour for six separate attractions. A rope-drop day cannot.

Picking which park gets the late day

If one of your park days is going to start late and you can choose which:

  1. EPCOT first choice. A 0.7-minute penalty, a flat curve, and two character lines that are better in the afternoon than the morning.
  2. Animal Kingdom second. A 7.4-minute penalty on arrival, repaid by an afternoon that improves every hour and six attractions that are cheapest in the evening.
  3. Magic Kingdom third. A 4.9-minute penalty is small, but you give up the cheapest hour anywhere at Disney World, and the character meets have to move to the front of the day.
  4. Hollywood Studios last. A 13.5-minute penalty and a noon peak that eight attractions share. If a late start is unavoidable here, plan the last hour first and work backwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is rope drop still worth it if I can only manage it once? Spend it at Hollywood Studios. Its 8am figure is 18.4 minutes against 37.1 at noon, the widest best-to-worst hour gap of the four Disney parks.

Which park should I visit if I know I will arrive late? EPCOT. Starting at 10am instead of 8am costs 0.7 minutes a line there, against 13.5 at Hollywood Studios.

Do I need to stay until close on a late-start day? It is where most of the value is. At Magic Kingdom eight attractions are cheapest at 10pm, at EPCOT five are, and at Hollywood Studios four are.

Is there a Disney park where arriving early is actively worse? Animal Kingdom comes closest. Avatar Flight of Passage's worst hour is 8am (53.2 minutes) and its best is 8pm (20.8), and the park as a whole is cheapest at 7pm.

The bottom line

A 10am start costs between 0.7 and 13.5 minutes a line depending on which gate you walk through, and in every case the repayment is at the other end of the day. Front-load the attractions that are cheapest in the morning and immune to the hour, give the 11am-to-2pm block to food and shows, and build the last two hours around the headliners that are genuinely cheapest then.

For the other side of this argument, see is rope drop actually worth it and when to arrive at any theme park. For plans built around the end of the day, see the last hour strategy and Animal Kingdom in half a day. For the midday block specifically, see Hollywood Studios at midday.
