Hollywood Studios at Midday: A Plan for the Park's Worst Hour

Six attractions at Disney's Hollywood Studios hit their single worst wait of the day at exactly 12pm: Slinky Dog Dash, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, Toy Story Mania!, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Alien Swirling Saucers. Four more peak at 11am. The park's own worst hour is noon, at 37.1 minutes park-wide against an 18.4-minute floor at 8am.

Hollywood Studios also carries the widest best-to-worst spread of any Walt Disney World park: 37.1 − 18.4 = 18.7 minutes on every line you join. Most of that damage lands inside one three-hour block, which is inconvenient if you are standing in it and useful if you plan for it.

What noon costs at each ride

Every one of the six, best hour against worst:

Add the last column: 35.5 + 31.3 + 30.1 + 29.8 + 26.8 + 25.2 = 178.7 minutes. Ride all six at noon rather than at each ride's own best hour and you stand for very nearly three extra hours.

Note the split in the "best hour" column. Toy Story Mania!, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror bottom out at 8am. Slinky Dog Dash, Rise of the Resistance and Alien Swirling Saucers bottom out at 10pm. The six do not share a solution — three of them want your morning and three of them want your night.

The four that peak an hour earlier

Noon is not the whole problem. Four more attractions post their worst hour at 11am:

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway is the sharpest of these: 16.1 minutes at 8am against 44.3 at 11am, a jump of 28.2 minutes inside three hours.

Star Tours is the exception that proves the park's rule. Its worst hour is 8.1 minutes. Even at the height of the midday crush it is a walk-on by Hollywood Studios standards, and it is indoors and air-conditioned. Remember that at 11:45am.

What to actually do between 11am and 2pm

Two attractions do not follow the midday pattern at all, and they are the backbone of this plan.

Meet Edna Mode at the Edna Mode Experience. Its best hour is 12pm, at 13.5 minutes — the exact hour the park is at its worst. Its worst hour is 10am, at 14 minutes. The whole day swings by half a minute. This is the single most efficient thing to be doing at Hollywood Studios at noon.

Meet Disney Stars at Red Carpet Dreams. Its worst hour is 6pm (34.5 minutes), not midday. It averages 28.8 minutes overall, so it is never cheap, but noon is not its peak and the evening is.

Add Star Tours, and the midday block has three things in it that do not punish you.

Here is the shape of the plan:

1. 11am — Star Tours. Its worst hour, and its worst hour is 8.1 minutes. Take the air conditioning.
2. 11:30am — Meet Disney Stars at Red Carpet Dreams. Not its peak. Its peak is six hours away.
3. 12pm — Meet Edna Mode. The park's worst hour, and this attraction's best.
4. 12:30pm–1:30pm — eat. Park-wide waits are 37.1 at 12pm and 34.1 at 1pm. There is no version of this hour where standing in a queue is the efficient move.
5. 2pm — start moving again. Park-wide has come down to 32.8, and by 4pm it reaches its afternoon floor of 29.5.

The second peak nobody plans for

Hollywood Studios does not simply decline after lunch. The park-wide average falls to 29.5 at 4pm, then climbs back to 31.9 at 6pm and 32.9 at 7pm before finally dropping to 20.9 at 9pm and 20.8 at 10pm.

That evening bump is where Meet Disney Stars at Red Carpet Dreams hits its own 6pm worst hour of 34.5 minutes. If you pushed the character meets to "later," later is worse than midday for that one.

The genuinely cheap window is the last two hours. Three of the six noon-peakers post their best hour at 10pm — Slinky Dog Dash (39.4), Rise of the Resistance (20.5) and Alien Swirling Saucers (5.6). Rise of the Resistance at 10pm is 31.3 minutes shorter than Rise of the Resistance at noon — the difference between a headliner queue and an ordinary one.

Wednesday averages 25 minutes and Friday averages 34.2 — a 9.2-minute difference on every line, before you make a single routing decision. A midday plan on a Wednesday and a midday plan on a Friday are not the same problem.

Put Star Tours, Red Carpet Dreams and Edna Mode into that block, eat through the worst of it, and hold Slinky Dog Dash, Rise of the Resistance and Alien Swirling Saucers for 10pm, when all three are at their cheapest.
