The reopening arrived in the middle of a heavy refurbishment season at Walt Disney World. Disney closed 16 rides in April 2026 and 14 more in May 2026 across its parks. Big Thunder Mountain's return was one of several headline reopenings that spring, alongside Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (reopened April 8, 2026) and, later that month at other parks, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets and Soarin' Across America (both May 26, 2026).
