Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Is Back: What's New

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed for nearly 16 months — from January 6, 2025 until it reopened on May 4, 2026. That's one of the longest refurbishment windows of any Magic Kingdom attraction in recent memory.

The Frontierland coaster came back with three confirmed changes: new track, new ride vehicles, and a new scene called Rainbow Caverns.

The reopening arrived in the middle of a heavy refurbishment season at Walt Disney World. Disney closed 16 rides in April 2026 and 14 more in May 2026 across its parks. Big Thunder Mountain's return was one of several headline reopenings that spring, alongside Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (reopened April 8, 2026) and, later that month at other parks, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets and Soarin' Across America (both May 26, 2026).
