8 Quiet Disney World Rides Whose Wait More Than Triples

Wildlife Express Train at Animal Kingdom averages 7.4 minutes. At its busiest hour it reaches 42. That is a 5.7x jump on a ride most people file under "we'll grab it if there's no line" — and it is the most extreme example of a pattern that runs right through Disney World's gentlest attractions.

The headliners are the opposite. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind averages 72.2 minutes and peaks at 172, a 2.4x jump. Slinky Dog Dash goes from 60.3 to 123, just 2.0x. Big lines are bad but predictable. Small lines are not.

The eight rides that more than triple

Ranked by how many times over their own average each ride's busiest hour runs.

Ride Park Avg wait (min) Peak hourly avg Multiple
Wildlife Express Train Animal Kingdom 7.4 42 5.7x
The Seas with Nemo & Friends EPCOT 9.2 38 4.1x
Dumbo the Flying Elephant Magic Kingdom 8 32 4.0x
Under the Sea – Journey of The Little Mermaid Magic Kingdom 8.5 32 3.8x
it's a small world Magic Kingdom 9 32 3.6x
Star Tours – The Adventures Continue Hollywood Studios 5.7 20 3.5x
Living with the Land EPCOT 11.3 39 3.5x
Journey Into Imagination with Figment EPCOT 7.6 26 3.4x

The arithmetic is the peak divided by the average: 42 ÷ 7.4 = 5.7, 38 ÷ 9.2 = 4.1, 32 ÷ 8 = 4.0, and so on down the list.

Every ride here averages under 12 minutes. Every one of them can cost you half an hour.

Compare that to the rides you actually plan around

Ride Park Avg wait (min) Peak hourly avg Multiple
TRON Lightcycle / Run Magic Kingdom 52.3 139 2.7x
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind EPCOT 72.2 172 2.4x
Slinky Dog Dash Hollywood Studios 60.3 123 2.0x
Avatar Flight of Passage Animal Kingdom 41.1 83 2.0x
Test Track EPCOT 60.3 114 1.9x
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Hollywood Studios 40.4 73 1.8x
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Magic Kingdom 39.6 67 1.7x

Not one headliner clears 3x. Seven of the eight quiet rides do.

Why the gentle rides behave this way

Two things are going on, and neither is a surprise once you see the numbers.

The first is arithmetic. When a ride's baseline is 8 minutes, adding 24 minutes of crowd triples it. When the baseline is 60, the same 24 minutes is a 40% bump. A small denominator makes every surge look enormous.

The second is capacity. The rides on the first list are mostly low-throughput or continuously-loading family attractions with modest hourly capacity. Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Under the Sea – Journey of The Little Mermaid sit in Fantasyland next to the two longest lines in Fantasyland, so they absorb the overflow whenever Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Peter Pan's Flight back up. Their own hourly numbers confirm it: Dumbo runs 6 minutes at 8am and 14.8 at 8pm, Under the Sea runs 4.7 at 8am and 13.4 at 5pm.

The practical version: a low average is a statement about a ride's good hours, not a promise about the hour you are standing in front of it.

What this changes about your plan

  1. Stop treating short-line rides as filler you can slot in anywhere. Filler works at 8am. At noon in Fantasyland, "we'll just do Dumbo" can cost as much as a headliner.
  2. Use the best hour, even for the small stuff. it's a small world runs 5.1 minutes at 10pm and 13.3 at noon. Pirates of the Caribbean runs 4.8 at 8am and 19.9 at noon. These are two-minute decisions that save twenty.
  3. Take them at the edges of the day. All three Magic Kingdom rides on this list post their best hour at either 8am or 10pm — Dumbo and Under the Sea at opening, it's a small world at close. The middle of the day is where their averages get made.
  4. Watch EPCOT's World Nature cluster in particular. The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Living with the Land and Journey Into Imagination with Figment are three of the eight, they sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, and all three post their worst hour at 11am. That single hour turns the calmest corner of EPCOT into a queue.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5.7x multiple worse than a long line? No — Wildlife Express Train at its worst is still 42 minutes, which is less than Seven Dwarfs Mine Train on an ordinary afternoon. The multiple tells you how unreliable a ride is, not how bad it is.

Which of the eight is the easiest to get right? Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. It runs 4.5 minutes at 8am against 8.1 at 11am, so even its worst hour is short. The 20-minute peak is a genuine outlier rather than a daily event.

Does this mean the busiest hour is a fluke? It means it is the top of the range rather than the middle of it. Plan against the ride's worst typical hour, and treat the peak figure as the ceiling you are avoiding.

The bottom line

The rides that wreck a touring plan are rarely the ones you built it around. They are the eight-minute rides you assumed were free. Check the hour on the small ones too — it is where the cheapest minutes in the park are hiding.

More on this: Disney World walk-on rides, the rides with the biggest hourly swing, the noon blacklist, underrated Disney World rides, and family rides with longer lines than thrill rides.
