VelociCoaster vs Hagrid's: Which Line Moves Faster?

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure averages 60.3 minutes. Jurassic World VelociCoaster averages 35.8. That's a 24.5-minute gap between the two biggest lines at Islands of Adventure — Hagrid's runs nearly double VelociCoaster's typical wait, according to our wait-time data.

The headline numbers

Attraction Zone Avg wait (min) Peak hourly avg
Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Hogsmeade 60.3 83
Jurassic World VelociCoaster Jurassic Park 35.8 73

This isn't a data-thinness artifact — Hagrid's really does run longer, consistently, and its peak hourly average (83 minutes) is also the higher of the two.

The gap just got more consequential

As of July 1, 2026, Hagrid's is no longer included in Universal Express Pass. VelociCoaster's Express status is unaffected. That means the wait gap between these two rides is now a gap in standby-only time for Hagrid's against a ride where Express is still an option for paying guests. See Hagrid's Dropped From Express Pass on July 1 for the full breakdown of that change.

They peak at opposite times of day

This is the part that should change how you sequence your morning. Each ride's single best and worst hour, from our data:

Attraction Best hour Best avg (min) Worst hour Worst avg (min)
Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure 10pm 38.6 9am 75.1
Jurassic World VelociCoaster 8am 12.2 8pm 46.6

VelociCoaster is shortest right at park open and longest in the evening — the pattern you'd expect from a rope-drop headliner. Hagrid's is the mirror image: its worst hour in our data is 9am, and its best is 10pm. Rope-dropping VelociCoaster is a good instinct backed by the data. Rope-dropping Hagrid's is the opposite of what the numbers recommend — the rush to be first in line is exactly what inflates the 9am wait to 75.1 minutes.

What this means for your morning

If you can only rope-drop one ride, VelociCoaster is the better bet: its 8am average of 12.2 minutes is a fraction of its 46.6-minute evening peak, and you capture that advantage by simply showing up early. Hagrid's doesn't reward the same strategy. Its lowest average in our data comes at 10pm — not a realistic target for most touring plans — but any hour after the opening rush should beat the 75.1-minute 9am average.

A practical sequence: ride VelociCoaster first thing, then use the rest of the morning on lower-wait attractions elsewhere in the park, and circle back to Hagrid's once the initial surge has had time to clear. For the full land-by-land plan this fits into, see Islands of Adventure Touring Plan: Data-Backed Ride Order.

Where these two rank in the park

Both are well ahead of the rest of the lineup. The next-closest attraction, Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, averages 34.7 minutes — close to VelociCoaster but still well under Hagrid's. No other ride at Islands of Adventure tops 31 minutes. If your day has room for only two "big line" rides, these are the two the data says to plan around — and Hagrid's is the one that now runs standby-only for everyone. For families weighing whether either line is worth it at all, Islands of Adventure With Kids: Ride Order That Works covers the lower-wait alternative route through the park.
