Your First Hour at a Disney Park, Planned

Head straight for TRON Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom, Frozen Ever After at EPCOT, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Hollywood Studios, and Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. Those four rides show the clearest reward for showing up at opening — and at Animal Kingdom, the ride most people rush to first, Avatar Flight of Passage, is actually the one to skip until evening.

The first-hour target at each park

Every one of these rides at least doubles its wait within a few hours of opening. Runaway Railway is the most dramatic case: it triples between 8am and 11am, so this isn't a "get there by 10" situation — it's a "be in line at rope drop" one.

The exception: don't rope-drop Flight of Passage

Conventional wisdom says run to Avatar Flight of Passage first thing. Our data says the opposite. Flight of Passage's worst hour of the day is 8am, at 66.2 minutes. Its best hour is 7pm, at 29.5 minutes — less than half. Everyone else's rope-drop instinct is working against you here. Ride Expedition Everest first instead (6.1 minutes at 8am, its best hour of the day), and save Flight of Passage for the evening.

Why this works

Each of these picks comes from the same pattern: a ride with a big gap between its best hour and its worst hour, where the best hour happens to fall right at opening.

• TRON Lightcycle / Run never gets easy — even at its best (8am), it's the longest average wait in Magic Kingdom. Riding it any later only makes that worse.
• Frozen Ever After goes from a 21.5-minute opener to a 57.9-minute midday wait, the widest morning-to-peak swing at EPCOT.
• Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway is the sharpest riser at Hollywood Studios in the first few hours of the day.
• Expedition Everest is Animal Kingdom's best rope-drop value: lowest possible wait for a ride most guests treat as a must-do.
