Arriving at Magic Kingdom After Lunch? Do This

Six Magic Kingdom rides have their shortest average wait of the day at 10pm, including Peter Pan's Flight and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. That makes an after-lunch arrival a real strategy. It only works if the park is open late on the date you're going.

Check your date before you plan around 10pm. Magic Kingdom's closing time changes from day to day. On some nights a separately ticketed evening event closes the park early for regular guests. Look up your exact date on Disney's official park hours and events calendar. On the day, check which rides are actually running in the My Disney Experience app or on our live Magic Kingdom wait times page. The 10pm figures below are historical averages from nights the park was open at 10pm. They say nothing about a night it closes earlier, or about a ride that's down.

The rides that get shorter as the night goes on

If your date runs to 10pm or later, these six are worth saving for the end of the night. All six reach their lowest average at 10pm.

Two things stand out.

• Peter Pan, Seven Dwarfs and Pooh are night rides. At 10pm they average 8.5, 11.4 and 4.4 minutes shorter than at 8am. If you're arriving after lunch, you're giving up nothing by leaving these until last.
• Jungle Cruise, Under the Sea and The Barnstormer average almost the same wait at 8am and 10pm. The minutes they save are all relative to the afternoon. Jungle Cruise drops from 35 minutes at 11am to 6.8 at 10pm, about 28 minutes shorter.

The 9pm column matters if your night ends at 10pm. All six are already well down from their busiest hour, so you don't have to cram them all into the last few minutes.

What doesn't follow this pattern

TRON Lightcycle / Run goes the other way. It averages 31.4 minutes at 8am and peaks at 62.3 minutes at 8pm, and it's still at 57.6 minutes at 10pm. Don't count on the evening to rescue TRON. If you missed it in the morning, a Lightning Lane or an early start on another day is the more reliable fix.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Space Mountain do ease off late, just not until the very end of the night. Big Thunder averages 33.7 minutes at noon and 35.2 at 6pm, its busiest hour, then falls to 15.2 minutes at 10pm. Space Mountain peaks at 32.4 minutes at noon and falls to 17.7 at 10pm. On a late night you could leave them for the end too, but that makes the final hour very crowded.

A simple afternoon route for a late-closing night

1. Confirm tonight's hours and live ride status first. Check the official calendar for closing time and any ticketed event, then live waits for anything that's down. Use this route only if the park is open until at least 10pm for regular guests. Otherwise, use the shorter-day plan below.
2. Do TRON as soon as you can, with a Lightning Lane if you have one. It doesn't get better at night.
3. Pick up Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean whenever you pass them. Both are busiest at noon (24.3 and 22.4 minutes) and drop to 14.7 and 5.3 minutes by 10pm, so there's no need to plan around them.
4. Choose between Big Thunder and Space Mountain before dinner or right at the end. Before dinner, the wait is near its daytime high. At the end, it's in competition with your six night rides.
5. Save the six rides above for the last two hours. Start with Seven Dwarfs and Peter Pan, which still average 20 minutes or more at 10pm. Finish with the shorter ones.

If your date closes early

On a 6pm, 7pm or 8pm close, or a party night that ends regular hours early, the late drop in the table never happens. An after-lunch arrival then lands in the busiest part of the day. At 5pm, Seven Dwarfs averages 47 minutes, Peter Pan 40.4 and Pooh 31.5. A short afternoon calls for a different plan.

• Pick your two or three must-dos and decide how you'll ride them. Use Lightning Lanes or accept the midday waits. Don't wait for a quieter evening.
• Fill the gaps with rides that stay short all afternoon. Under the Sea and The Barnstormer average between 8.7 and 14 minutes in every hour from noon to 5pm. Pirates of the Caribbean is busiest at noon (22.4 minutes), then stays between 13.4 and 15.2 minutes from 2pm to 5pm.
• Treat the last hour as a bonus, not the plan. Waits can ease near closing, but our 10pm averages don't tell you how much on an early night.
