Three Epic Universe Changes to Know Before Your Next Visit

Epic Universe loses a show tomorrow, gains three after-hours dates in the autumn, and has broken ground on its first new attraction since opening. None of the three is a park-wide upheaval. All three change what a specific day there looks like.

1. The Untrainable Dragon closes 15–20 September

The Untrainable Dragon, the stage show in the How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk land, closes for refurbishment from 15 September and is scheduled to return on 21 September 2026, according to WDW News Today and Disney Tourist Blog. Universal has not said what the work involves. At under a week, it reads as routine.

The show runs on fixed showtimes rather than a standby queue, so it does not carry a posted wait. What that means practically is that a six-day window opens where Isle of Berk has one fewer thing to absorb guests, and everything else in the land is a queue:

Three of the four peak at noon, and the fourth peaks at 11am. If you are visiting Isle of Berk during the closure week and the show was going to be your midday break, replace it with something other than these four — Hiccup Wing Glider alone runs 37.8 minutes at 12pm against 5.5 at 8am, a 32.3-minute swing.

2. Universal Nights adds three dates, and the data says nights are not quiet

Universal Orlando has expanded its Universal Nights after-hours lineup at Epic Universe, adding Saturday 24 October, Friday 6 November and Friday 20 November to the existing 3 October and 17 October dates, ClickOrlando reported on 2 September. The 17 October date is already sold out. Tickets start at $179.99 per person, the event runs 9pm to midnight with entry available from 7pm, and it covers all five worlds plus included specialty snacks and drinks.

The pricing matters because Epic Universe at night is not the bargain that "after hours" usually implies. Its park-wide average by hour:

The park bottoms out at 8pm (21.7 minutes), holds roughly flat at 9pm (22.1), and then climbs to 34.1 at 10pm. That is a 12-minute rise into the final hour — 34.1 − 22.1 = 12 — and it is the largest late-night increase of any Orlando park in our data. Magic Kingdom (14.6 to 12.4), EPCOT (22.4 to 18.4) and Hollywood Studios (20.9 to 20.8) all fall or hold flat across the same stretch.

So a separately ticketed event that clears the park and runs 9pm to midnight is aimed squarely at the hour Epic Universe is worst on a normal night. Whether $179.99 is worth it depends on your group, but the premise is sound in a way it would not be at, say, EPCOT, where 10pm is already the cheapest hour of the day at 18.4 minutes.

If you are going on a regular evening instead, 8pm is the window, not 10pm.

3. A new Dark Universe ride is under construction

Construction has begun on a new attraction in Dark Universe — the first ride at Epic Universe to break ground since the park opened in May 2025. Blog Mickey reported on 13 September that aerial photography and Orange County permit filings show a graded site of roughly 2.33 acres next to the existing Monsters Unchained show building, with a crane and heavy equipment staged on it. WDW News Today published the same aerial findings.

The permits describe a three-storey building of 93,308 square feet, of which 71,500 square feet is listed as tenant space, with a ride maintenance bay on the first floor.

Universal has announced nothing about the ride type, the theme, or an opening date. Reporting notes rumours of a Creature from the Black Lagoon theme, but that is speculation and not a Universal statement — treat it that way.

For a trip in the next year or two this is not a planning item. It matters for one reason: Dark Universe currently runs on two tracked rides, and those two behave nothing like each other.

Curse of the Werewolf runs 4.2 minutes at 8am and 49.1 at 1pm — a 44.9-minute spread, one of the widest anywhere at Epic Universe. Monsters Unchained moves by 9.2 minutes across the same day. Adding a third ride to this land will change how both of those behave, but not until it opens.

What to do with all this

Visiting between 15 and 20 September? Plan Isle of Berk around four queues instead of three queues and a show, and do Hiccup Wing Glider and Dragon Racer's Rally before 9am if you can — both post their best hour at 8am.
Considering Universal Nights? The case for it is stronger at Epic Universe than the price alone suggests, because 10pm is this park's late-evening peak rather than its trough.
On a normal evening, leave at 9pm, not 11pm. 8pm is Epic Universe's quietest hour at 21.7 minutes; 10pm is 34.1.
Pick a Wednesday. Epic Universe averages 28.4 minutes on Wednesdays against 38.1 on Sundays — a 9.7-minute difference on every line in the park.

The bottom line

One short closure, three new after-hours dates, and a construction site. The closure is the only one that touches a trip this month, and the after-hours news is the one worth reading against the wait data: Epic Universe gets busier at 10pm, not quieter, which is exactly the gap a hard-ticket night event is built to sell you out of.
