The Hogwarts Express Has Two Queues, and One Runs 73% Longer

Walt Disney World runs the same train through two Magic Kingdom stations, and the wait is the same at both: Walt Disney World Railroad – Fantasyland averages 15.9 minutes, Walt Disney World Railroad – Main Street, U.S.A. averages 15.9 minutes. Both post their best hour at 8pm (14.9 minutes) and their worst at 2pm (16.5). Two doors onto one train, two identical numbers. (Disney's railroad is mid-refurbishment as this is published — it is closed until October 30 — but the figures above describe the days it was running.)

Universal's Hogwarts Express does not work that way. The King's Cross Station queue at Universal Studios Florida averages 24.2 minutes. The Hogsmeade Station queue at Islands of Adventure averages 14 minutes. Same train, same journey, 10.2 minutes of difference (24.2 − 14) depending on which end you board — and at the wrong hour, the gap is much wider than that.

The four station queues, side by side

Station Park Avg wait (min) Peak hourly avg Best hour Worst hour
Walt Disney World Railroad – Fantasyland Magic Kingdom 15.9 20 8pm (14.9) 2pm (16.5)
Walt Disney World Railroad – Main Street, U.S.A. Magic Kingdom 15.9 20 8pm (14.9) 2pm (16.5)
Hogwarts Express – King's Cross Station Universal Studios Florida 24.2 80 9am (9.6) 5pm (45.6)
Hogwarts Express – Hogsmeade Station Islands of Adventure 14 42 9am (9.6) 3pm (19.1)

The arithmetic on the Universal rows:

  • All-day average: 24.2 ÷ 14 = 1.73. King's Cross runs 73% longer than Hogsmeade.
  • Worst hour: 45.6 ÷ 19.1 = 2.39. At its peak, King's Cross runs 139% above Hogsmeade's peak — a 26.5-minute gap (45.6 − 19.1).
  • Ceiling: King's Cross's busiest hour has averaged 80 minutes, against 42 at Hogsmeade.

And the detail that makes the whole thing planable: both stations post their best hour at 9am, at exactly the same figure, 9.6 minutes. The two queues start the day indistinguishable and then come apart.

Why one end gets expensive and the other does not

The two stations sit in very different neighbourhoods. King's Cross is the London waterfront entrance to Diagon Alley, which also holds Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts (26.1 minutes average, with a busiest hour that has averaged 93). Hogsmeade's station sits beside Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (15.1 minutes) and Flight of the Hippogriff (14.6).

Attraction Park Avg wait (min)
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts Universal Studios Florida 26.1
Hogwarts Express – King's Cross Station Universal Studios Florida 24.2
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Islands of Adventure 15.1
Flight of the Hippogriff Islands of Adventure 14.6
Hogwarts Express – Hogsmeade Station Islands of Adventure 14

The two heaviest Wizarding World queues are both in Diagon Alley, and they are next to each other. On the Hogsmeade side, the station is the lightest of the three.

The timing lines up the same way. King's Cross posts its worst hour at 5pm — late, and well past Universal Studios Florida's own worst hour of 3pm (23.8 minutes park-wide). Hogsmeade's worst hour is 3pm at 19.1, which is 0.3 minutes below Islands of Adventure's park-wide worst hour of 19.4 at noon (19.4 − 19.1). One station spikes hard and late; the other barely separates from its park's background level.

How to use this

The wait is charged at the station where you board, so the direction you ride is a real decision.

  1. Board at Hogsmeade when you can. Islands of Adventure to Universal Studios Florida is the cheap direction: 14 minutes on average against 24.2 the other way.
  2. If you only ride it once, ride it as your park hop. Build the day so your single train journey is the Hogsmeade boarding — start at Islands of Adventure, take the train across, finish at Universal Studios Florida.
  3. Never board at King's Cross at 5pm. That is the station's worst hour at 45.6 minutes, almost five times its own 9.6-minute best. Walking between the parks is not a long walk.
  4. If you want the round trip, do the King's Cross leg in the morning. Both stations bottom out at 9am (9.6 minutes each), which is the one hour of the day when the direction does not cost you anything.
  5. Check your ticket before you plan around any of this. The Hogwarts Express requires a Park-to-Park ticket to ride between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, per Universal Orlando. A single-park ticket does not get you on the train in either direction.

The short version

  • Disney's two Magic Kingdom railroad stations post identical waits, 15.9 minutes each
  • Universal's two Hogwarts Express stations do not: King's Cross 24.2, Hogsmeade 14
  • The gap is widest at King's Cross's 5pm worst hour, 45.6 minutes against Hogsmeade's 19.1 peak
  • Both stations are equally cheap at 9am, at 9.6 minutes
  • Board at Hogsmeade, ride toward Diagon Alley, and keep the train as your park hop

For the parks on either end of the line, see the Universal Studios Florida wait times breakdown and the Islands of Adventure touring plan. King's Cross is also one of the clearest cases in rides that peak at dinner, and for the Disney side of the comparison, the Liberty Square and Main Street guide covers the Walt Disney World Railroad.
