Disney World Wait-Time Ceilings: What a Bad Hour Really Costs

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad averages 27.2 minutes. Its worst hour, noon, averages 35.2. Its busiest hour has averaged 84 — more than three times the all-day figure, and 48.8 minutes above the hour you were already trying to avoid.

That third number is the one most plans ignore. Avoiding a ride's worst hour protects you from a bad average. It does not protect you from the ceiling.

The three numbers that describe any Disney line

Every attraction in our wait-time data carries three figures worth knowing, and they answer different questions:

  • All-day average. What the line costs on a typical visit. This is the planning number.
  • Worst-hour average. The single hour that runs longest across typical operating days. This is the hour to dodge.
  • Peak hourly average. The highest any single hour has averaged for that ride. This is the ceiling — what a genuinely bad hour looks like.

The gap between the second and third is where plans fall apart. Here is that gap for fourteen Walt Disney World headliners. The last column is the ceiling divided by the all-day average.

The ceilings, park by park

Attraction Park All-day avg Worst hour (avg) Ceiling Ceiling ÷ avg
TRON Lightcycle / Run Magic Kingdom 52.3 8pm (63.3) 139 2.66
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Magic Kingdom 39.6 5pm (47) 67 1.69
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Magic Kingdom 27.2 12pm (35.2) 84 3.09
Space Mountain Magic Kingdom 25 12pm (32.7) 73 2.92
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind EPCOT 72.2 7pm (87.7) 172 2.38
Test Track EPCOT 60.3 1pm (69.6) 114 1.89
Frozen Ever After EPCOT 46.9 1pm (59.2) 86 1.83
Slinky Dog Dash Hollywood Studios 60.3 12pm (74.9) 123 2.04
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets Hollywood Studios 43.5 12pm (52) 86 1.98
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Hollywood Studios 40.4 12pm (51.8) 73 1.81
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Hollywood Studios 32.7 12pm (39.9) 73 2.23
Avatar Flight of Passage Animal Kingdom 41.1 8am (53.2) 83 2.02
Na'vi River Journey Animal Kingdom 29.1 11am (45) 67 2.30
Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom 21.5 10am (44.6) 65 3.02

Thirteen of the fourteen carry a ceiling at least 1.8 times their all-day average. Nine of them more than double it.

The widest ceilings do not belong to the longest lines

Rank that table by the last column and the order flips almost completely:

  1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — 84 ÷ 27.2 = 3.09
  2. Kilimanjaro Safaris — 65 ÷ 21.5 = 3.02
  3. Space Mountain — 73 ÷ 25 = 2.92
  4. TRON Lightcycle / Run — 139 ÷ 52.3 = 2.66
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — 172 ÷ 72.2 = 2.38

The three widest belong to rides that average under 30 minutes. Guardians and Test Track, the two longest averages at Walt Disney World, sit in the middle and lower half of the list. Rides with long averages are long most of the time, which makes them predictable. Rides with moderate averages are the ones capable of surprising you by a factor of three.

Big Thunder is the clearest case. An expected 27.2-minute wait and an observed 84-minute wait are different decisions: one is worth joining on the way past, the other is most of a meal.

Dodging the worst hour is not the same as dodging the ceiling

Subtract the worst-hour average from the ceiling and you get the exposure a well-timed plan still carries. Every figure in the Gap column is ceiling minus worst-hour average:

Attraction Worst hour (avg) Ceiling Gap
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind 87.7 172 84.3
TRON Lightcycle / Run 63.3 139 75.7
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 35.2 84 48.8
Slinky Dog Dash 74.9 123 48.1
Test Track 69.6 114 44.4
Space Mountain 32.7 73 40.3
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets 52 86 34
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 39.9 73 33.1
Avatar Flight of Passage 53.2 83 29.8
Frozen Ever After 59.2 86 26.8
Na'vi River Journey 45 67 22
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance 51.8 73 21.2
Kilimanjaro Safaris 44.6 65 20.4
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train 47 67 20

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has reached 84.3 minutes beyond its own worst average hour. TRON has reached 75.7 minutes beyond its. On the days that produce those readings, there is no hour of the day that saves you — the correct move is a different ride, not a different hour.

What to do with this

  1. Plan off the all-day average, not the ceiling. The ceiling is a worst case, not a forecast. Building a day around 84-minute Big Thunder waits would leave most of your park time unused.
  2. Carry one substitution per headliner. The rides with the widest ceilings happen to sit next to cheap alternates. Big Thunder and Space Mountain are both in the park with Pirates of the Caribbean (11.2 minutes) and the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover (7.3). If the posted wait is near a ride's ceiling, you have somewhere to go.
  3. Check the posted number against the average, not against your patience. Space Mountain averages 25 minutes and its worst hour averages 32.7, so a posted wait near its 73-minute ceiling is the line behaving unlike itself. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind averages 72.2 and its worst hour averages 87.7, so a long posted wait there is the line behaving exactly as expected. The same number means different things on different rides.
  4. Treat the worst hour as a floor for bad news, not a cap. Noon is the hour to avoid at Big Thunder, Space Mountain, Slinky Dog Dash, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Rise of the Resistance and Tower of Terror. Avoiding it moves you off the worst average. It does not move you off the ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

Which Disney World ride has the widest gap between its average and its ceiling? Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It averages 27.2 minutes and its busiest hour has averaged 84, a factor of 3.09.

Does a long average mean a ride is unpredictable? The opposite, mostly. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind carries the longest average at Walt Disney World (72.2 minutes) and one of the narrower ceiling multiples on this list (2.38).

Should I plan around peak numbers? No. Use the all-day average to build the plan and the ceiling to decide when to abandon a line you are standing next to.

Why does Kilimanjaro Safaris have such a wide ceiling? Its average is low (21.5 minutes) and its worst hour comes early, at 10am (44.6), before the park's own busiest hour. A 65-minute ceiling on a 21.5-minute average is what that mismatch looks like.

The bottom line

A typical wait tells you what to expect. A ceiling tells you what to do when expectations break. The rides most likely to break them are not the famous long lines — they are the moderate ones, led by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at 3.09 times its average and Kilimanjaro Safaris at 3.02.
