9 Rides Whose Worst Hour Is Dinnertime, Not Lunch

Magic Kingdom's single worst hour is 6pm, averaging 20.5 minutes across the park. Noon averages 20.2. The difference is small, but the direction matters: the hour everyone plans to avoid is not the hour that actually costs the most.

That pattern repeats at the ride level, and harder. Nine attractions across Orlando post their highest average wait at 4pm or later — several of them headliners that standard touring advice tells you to save for the afternoon, once the "midday rush" has passed.

The nine rides that peak after 4pm

Grouped by park, Disney first. The percentage is each ride's worst hour measured against its own best hour.

Attraction Park Best hour Worst hour Increase
TRON Lightcycle / Run Magic Kingdom 8am (34.6 min) 8pm (63.3 min) +83%
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Magic Kingdom 10pm (27.7 min) 5pm (47 min) +70%
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin Magic Kingdom 8am (7.9 min) 5pm (36.3 min) +359%
Princess Fairytale Hall Magic Kingdom 9am (13.3 min) 6pm (32.1 min) +141%
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind EPCOT 10pm (50.4 min) 7pm (87.7 min) +74%
Remy's Ratatouille Adventure EPCOT 10pm (17.4 min) 4pm (53.3 min) +206%
Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost Animal Kingdom 8am (14.3 min) 6pm (40.3 min) +182%
Jurassic World VelociCoaster Islands of Adventure 8am (11.8 min) 7pm (40.6 min) +244%
Hogwarts Express – King's Cross Station Universal Studios Florida 9am (9.6 min) 5pm (45.6 min) +375%

The arithmetic on the headline cases: Buzz Lightyear climbs 28.4 minutes between 8am and 5pm (36.3 − 7.9), which is 359% of its morning figure. Hogwarts Express at King's Cross climbs 36 minutes (45.6 − 9.6), or 375%. Those are not small afternoon drifts. They are the same magnitude as the noon spikes that get all the attention, shifted five hours later.

Four of these are Disney headliners

TRON Lightcycle / Run is the clearest case. It averages 52.3 minutes all day — the longest wait at Magic Kingdom — and its worst hour is 8pm, at 63.3 minutes. Its best hour is 8am, at 34.6. If you treat TRON as the ride you'll pick up "after dinner, once things calm down," you are choosing the single most expensive hour of its day and paying 28.7 extra minutes for the privilege.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train runs the same way at a lower amplitude: 47 minutes at 5pm against 27.7 at 10pm. Its worst hour sits in the dinner window; its best is the last hour of the night.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT peaks at 7pm (87.7 minutes) — the highest single-hour figure for any attraction in this table. Three hours later, at 10pm, the same ride averages 50.4. Waiting out the evening is worth 37.3 minutes on one ride.

Remy's Ratatouille Adventure is the most lopsided Disney entry: 53.3 minutes at 4pm against 17.4 at 10pm, a 35.9-minute gap on a ride whose all-day average is 42.8.

The character meet trap

Two of the nine are meet-and-greets, and they behave identically to each other. Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom bottoms out at 9am (13.3 minutes) and peaks at 6pm (32.1). Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost at Animal Kingdom bottoms out at 8am (14.3) and peaks at 6pm (40.3).

Both follow the family schedule rather than the ride schedule. Early-evening is when parents who have been in the park all day finally route back toward the characters they promised that morning. Adventurers Outpost at 6pm averages more than Avatar Flight of Passage's 41.1-minute all-day figure, which is a strange sentence to write about a photo line.

Three of the four Disney parks have an evening rise

This is not just a handful of rides. Look at the park-wide curves after 4pm:

Park 4pm 5pm 6pm 7pm 8pm
Magic Kingdom 19.4 20.1 20.5 20.2 18.5
EPCOT 26.8 25.7 26.8 26.6 24.2
Hollywood Studios 29.5 30.6 31.9 32.9 28.4
Animal Kingdom 17.6 17.6 16.3 12.4 12.8

Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios all rise between 4pm and 7pm. Hollywood Studios climbs 3.4 minutes over that stretch (32.9 − 29.5) to a 32.9-minute figure that sits only 4.2 minutes below its noon peak of 37.1.

Animal Kingdom is the exception, and it is a clean one. Its waits fall every hour from 11am onward, reaching 12.4 minutes at 7pm — the lightest hour of its day. Animal Kingdom genuinely does calm down at dinner. The other three Disney parks do not.

What to do with this

  1. Do not treat "after the midday rush" as a plan. At Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, the 5pm–7pm block is a second peak, not a recovery.
  2. Move the nine rides above to a morning or late-night slot. Six of them post their best hour at 8am, 9am or 10am; the other three post it at 10pm.
  3. Spend the dinner hours eating. If a park's waits are near their daily high between 5pm and 7pm, that is the cheapest time to be sitting down rather than standing in a queue.
  4. Use Animal Kingdom differently. It is the one Disney park where a late-afternoon arrival lands you in genuinely falling waits.
