Hour, Day or Park: Which Choice Shortens Your Disney Lines Most?

Magic Kingdom on its busiest day of the week averages 20.7 minutes a line. EPCOT on its quietest averages 22.6. A visitor who picks the worst possible day at Magic Kingdom still waits less than one who picks the best possible day at EPCOT.

Planning advice usually treats three decisions as equally important: which park, which day, which hour. In our wait-time data they are not close to equal. Here is what each one is actually worth.

What the hour is worth

Each park's cheapest and most expensive hour, and the distance between them. The hour gap is the worst-hour average minus the best-hour average:

Park Best hour Best avg Worst hour Worst avg Hour gap
Magic Kingdom 8am 11.5 6pm 20.5 9
EPCOT 10pm 18.4 11am 28.8 10.4
Hollywood Studios 8am 18.4 12pm 37.1 18.7
Animal Kingdom 7pm 12.4 11am 26.9 14.5

Hollywood Studios is the extreme: 37.1 − 18.4 = 18.7 minutes on every line you join, decided entirely by when you walk through the gate.

What the day is worth

The same exercise for the day of the week. The day gap is the busiest day's average minus the quietest day's:

Park Quietest day Quietest avg Busiest day Busiest avg Day gap
Magic Kingdom Tuesday 13.5 Saturday 20.7 7.2
EPCOT Wednesday 22.6 Sunday 29.7 7.1
Hollywood Studios Wednesday 25 Friday 34.2 9.2
Animal Kingdom Wednesday 15.6 Sunday 25.1 9.5

Three of the four parks bottom out on Wednesday. Magic Kingdom is the exception, at Tuesday. The busiest day is less consistent still — Saturday at Magic Kingdom, Sunday at EPCOT and Animal Kingdom, and Friday at Hollywood Studios, which means "avoid the weekend" is not a rule that transfers between parks. We cover that split in detail in weekday vs. weekend theme parks.

The hour beats the day at all four parks

Put the two gaps side by side. The last column is the hour gap divided by the day gap:

Park Hour gap (min) Day gap (min) Hour ÷ day
Magic Kingdom 9 7.2 1.25
EPCOT 10.4 7.1 1.46
Hollywood Studios 18.7 9.2 2.03
Animal Kingdom 14.5 9.5 1.53

The hour wins everywhere. At Hollywood Studios it wins by more than two to one: 18.7 ÷ 9.2 = 2.03. Magic Kingdom is the park where the day comes closest to mattering as much, at 1.25, and it is also the park with the smallest hour gap in absolute terms.

One caution: these are two separate views of the same lines, not two effects you can stack. Saving 9.2 minutes with a Wednesday at Hollywood Studios and 18.7 minutes with an 8am arrival does not add up to 27.9 minutes off every line. Treat them as a ranking of where to spend the flexibility you have, not as a sum.

And the park beats the day too

Average the seven day-of-week figures for each park and you get a rough park-level number:

  • Magic Kingdom: (18.8 + 16 + 13.5 + 18.6 + 18.9 + 14.8 + 20.7) ÷ 7 = 121.3 ÷ 7 = 17.3
  • Animal Kingdom: (25.1 + 22.8 + 18.3 + 15.6 + 16.4 + 20.9 + 24.6) ÷ 7 = 143.7 ÷ 7 = 20.5
  • EPCOT: (29.7 + 26.7 + 24.9 + 22.6 + 23.4 + 26.3 + 28.7) ÷ 7 = 182.3 ÷ 7 = 26
  • Hollywood Studios: (33.3 + 26.9 + 31.4 + 25 + 25.5 + 34.2 + 33.2) ÷ 7 = 209.5 ÷ 7 = 29.9

The spread between the calmest park and the busiest is 29.9 − 17.3 = 12.6 minutes. That is larger than the day gap at any of the four parks, and larger than the hour gap at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT.

Which gives a clean ranking of the three decisions, in minutes per line:

Decision Worth
The hour, at Hollywood Studios 18.7
The hour, at Animal Kingdom 14.5
The park (Magic Kingdom vs. Hollywood Studios) 12.6
The hour, at EPCOT 10.4
The day, at Animal Kingdom 9.5
The day, at Hollywood Studios 9.2
The hour, at Magic Kingdom 9
The day, at Magic Kingdom 7.2
The day, at EPCOT 7.1

The day of the week finishes last or near-last at every park. It is the decision most planning guides lead with, and the one worth least.

The comparison that makes the point

Magic Kingdom's busiest day of the week, Saturday, averages 20.7 minutes. Set that against the other parks' quietest days:

Comparison Figure
Magic Kingdom, busiest day (Saturday) 20.7
Animal Kingdom, quietest day (Wednesday) 15.6
EPCOT, quietest day (Wednesday) 22.6
Hollywood Studios, quietest day (Wednesday) 25

Only Animal Kingdom's best day beats Magic Kingdom's worst day. A Saturday at Magic Kingdom averages 22.6 − 20.7 = 1.9 minutes less per line than a Wednesday at EPCOT, and 25 − 20.7 = 4.3 minutes less than a Wednesday at Hollywood Studios. If your week is fixed and your park order is not, moving a park is worth more than moving a day.

How to use this when you build a week

  1. Decide the hour first. It is the single most valuable lever at every park, and at Hollywood Studios it is worth more than everything else combined.
  2. Give Hollywood Studios your best morning. Its 8am figure is 18.4 minutes and its noon figure is 37.1. No other Disney park punishes a slow start that hard.
  3. Put Magic Kingdom on the day you have least control over. It is the calmest of the four on average and the least sensitive to the day you pick, so it absorbs a bad date better than the others.
  4. Use Wednesday where you can. It is the quietest day at EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, and Tuesday is the quietest at Magic Kingdom.
  5. Do not trade an hour for a day. Moving a park day from Saturday to Wednesday is worth 7.1 to 9.5 minutes a line. Arriving two hours earlier is usually worth more.

Frequently asked questions

Which Disney park has the shortest waits? Magic Kingdom, averaging 17.3 minutes across the seven day-of-week figures, ahead of Animal Kingdom at 20.5, EPCOT at 26 and Hollywood Studios at 29.9.

Is Wednesday the best day at Disney World? It is the quietest day at EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. At Magic Kingdom, Tuesday is quieter, at 13.5 minutes against Wednesday's 18.6.

Does the day of the week matter at all? Yes, by 7.1 to 9.5 minutes a line depending on the park. It just matters less than the hour, and less than which park you are standing in.

Should I avoid weekends? Not universally. Hollywood Studios' busiest day is Friday (34.2 minutes), and Magic Kingdom's Sunday figure (18.8) is lower than its Thursday (18.9).

The bottom line

Rank the three decisions by what they are worth per line and the usual order inverts. The hour is worth 9 to 18.7 minutes, the park is worth 12.6, and the day is worth 7.1 to 9.5. Pick your hours carefully, pick your parks deliberately, and treat the calendar as the thing you adjust last.
