5 Magic Kingdom Rides to Skip (and 5 to Never Miss)

5 Magic Kingdom Rides to Skip (and 5 to Never Miss)

TRON Lightcycle / Run averages 54.4 minutes in our wait-time data — the longest of any ride at Magic Kingdom — and riding it at 8am instead of 8pm cuts that number by more than half. That's the whole logic behind this list: which waits are worth building your day around, and which ones you should route around entirely.

Never miss

1. TRON Lightcycle / Run

Averages 54.4 minutes with a peak hourly average of 97. Its best hour, 8am, still runs 34.6 minutes; its worst, 8pm, hits 69.5. Ride it first.

2. Tiana's Bayou Adventure

Averages 31.2 minutes, but the swing here is the sharpest in the park: 6.2 minutes at 8am versus 44.1 minutes at its noon worst hour — a sevenfold difference for the same ride on the same day.

3. Peter Pan's Flight

Averages 33.6 minutes. Its worst hour, 1pm, climbs to 43.8 minutes, but 10pm drops it to 20.7. A classic dark ride worth catching at either end of the day.

4. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Averages 27.4 minutes, with an 8am best of 12.1 minutes against a 6pm worst of 36.8. Ride it in the first hour and you'll pay less than half the average.

5. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

Averages 28.4 minutes, but its 8am best hour runs just 8.9 minutes — a near walk-on if you get there before the park fills. By noon, it's up to 39.2.

Skip (or reroute)

1. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, standby

Averages 41.1 minutes, and unlike everything above, the floor barely moves — even its best hour, 10pm, still runs 31 minutes. If you don't have a Lightning Lane reservation, this is the one ride at Magic Kingdom that never gets genuinely short.

2. Meet Princess Tiana and a Visiting Princess at Princess Fairytale Hall

Averages 23.2 minutes — close to Jungle Cruise's 24.4-minute average and well above Haunted Mansion's 19.7. That's a lot of standby time for a meet-and-greet. Reroute it to an actual ride unless your child specifically wants the meet.

3. Meet Ariel at Her Grotto

Averages 21.8 minutes and gets worse late: 30.1 minutes at its 7pm worst hour, directly competing with TRON and Peter Pan's Flight for your evening window. Visit before 10am instead, when it runs 14 minutes.

4. Space Mountain, late morning

Averages 31.4 minutes overall, but there's no real walk-on window — even its 8am best hour runs 20.6 minutes, and by noon it doubles to 42. Treat late morning through early afternoon as a dead zone for this one.

5. Astro Orbiter

Averages 11.7 minutes, which sounds mild until you check the swing: 4.9 minutes at 8am versus 18.3 minutes at 7pm, nearly a fourfold jump for a low-capacity spinner. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover next door averages 7.5 minutes and never asks for a real line.

Attraction Avg wait (min) Best hour Worst hour
TRON Lightcycle / Run 54.4 8am: 34.6 8pm: 69.5
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train 41.1 10pm: 31 5pm: 49.6
Peter Pan's Flight 33.6 10pm: 20.7 1pm: 43.8
Space Mountain 31.4 8am: 20.6 12pm: 42
Tiana's Bayou Adventure 31.2 8am: 6.2 12pm: 44.1
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin 28.4 8am: 8.9 12pm: 39.2
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 27.4 8am: 12.1 6pm: 36.8
Meet Princess Tiana and a Visiting Princess 23.2 9am: 12.8 5pm: 29
Meet Ariel at Her Grotto 21.8 9am: 14 7pm: 30.1
Astro Orbiter 11.7 8am: 4.9 7pm: 18.3

The pattern

The "never miss" list shares one trait: the wait swings hard enough that timing turns a 40-plus-minute ride into a 10-to-20-minute one. The "skip or reroute" list shares the opposite — either the floor never drops far (Seven Dwarfs Mine Train), the wait competes with better options at the same hour (the meet-and-greets, Space Mountain), or the payoff doesn't match a line that's outgrown a low-capacity ride (Astro Orbiter).
