5 Ancient Rides With Longer Lines Than the Headliner Next Door

At Disney's Animal Kingdom, Kali River Rapids — a rafting ride open since March 1999 — averages a 31.8-minute wait in our wait-time data. Expedition Everest, the park's 2006 mountain coaster headliner, averages 21.1 minutes. The rafting ride out-waits the coaster by more than 50%.
That is not a one-park fluke. Across our fact sheets, older, lower-throughput rides regularly out-wait the newer coaster built to be the park's main draw. Here are five of the clearest examples.
The five pairs
| Park | Older ride | Opened | Avg wait (min) | Headliner next door | Opened | Avg wait (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Kingdom | Kali River Rapids | 1999 | 31.8 | Expedition Everest | 2006 | 21.1 |
| Animal Kingdom | Kilimanjaro Safaris | 1998 | 23.4 | Expedition Everest | 2006 | 21.1 |
| Magic Kingdom | Peter Pan's Flight | 1971 | 33.6 | Space Mountain | 1975 | 31.4 |
| SeaWorld Orlando | Journey to Atlantis | 1998 | 19.6 | Ice Breaker | 2022 | 15.0 |
| Universal Studios Florida | E.T. Adventure | 1990 | 27.2 | Revenge of the Mummy | 2004 | 25.6 |
Why this happens
Every one of these "older" rides has a lower hourly throughput than the newer coaster it's out-waiting — smaller vehicles, longer load times, or a ride cycle that just can't cycle guests as fast. A 2020s launch coaster is usually engineered for volume from day one. A ride from 1971, 1990, 1998, or 1999 was not.
Kali River Rapids opened with Disney's Animal Kingdom on March 18, 1999, a raft ride with a fixed number of boats per hour. That modest throughput means it out-waits Expedition Everest, the park's 2006 mountain coaster, despite Everest being the far bigger draw. Kilimanjaro Safaris, the truck-based safari that opened with the park itself on April 22, 1998, out-waits Everest too — its trucks depart on a schedule built for a leisurely game drive, not for moving a line quickly.
Peter Pan's Flight is one of Magic Kingdom's original attractions, opening October 3, 1971. Its suspended, single-file vehicles were designed for a much smaller opening-day crowd. It still out-waits Space Mountain — Tomorrowland's 1975 space coaster — because Peter Pan's Flight simply cannot load and dispatch guests as fast as a coaster train can.
Journey to Atlantis at SeaWorld Orlando, a flume-coaster hybrid that opened April 17, 1998, out-waits Ice Breaker, the park's 2022 multi-launch coaster, largely because its boats load and unload far slower than Ice Breaker's train dispatch.
E.T. Adventure, the only opening-day attraction still running at Universal Studios Florida since June 7, 1990, out-waits Revenge of the Mummy — the park's 2004 launch coaster — thanks to its slow-moving suspended bicycles and a load process built for a much smaller park.
What this means for your plan
Don't assume the newest, most-hyped coaster automatically has the longest line. In every pair above, the flashier, newer ride actually moves people faster. If your group is choosing between an older classic and the park's modern headliner, check the current wait on both — the "big" ride might genuinely be the shorter line.
